Website: Dorset Explorer
During February 2001 the UK Farming industry was threatened by an outbreak of Foot and Mouth. Dorset Explorer is a Web based mapping system that was developed by the GIS (Geographical Information Systems) team to manage the Risk Assessed closure and re-opening of the RoW (Rights of Way) network. This mapping system is still up and running and provides information on the RoW network.
Then when I joined Dorset County Council in 2004 as part of my apprenticeship I built Dorset Explorer again from scratch. This involved using ASP, JavaScript, MapXtreme, Access Databases and Oracle Databases. These technologies all combined to give the Dorset Explorer you see today.
There is ALOT of outside interest. Especially after I went to the Association of Geographical Information conference. Once of the talks was dedicated to a particular use of Dorset Explorer. This particular version was used by the Environment Agency to show live flood information on the maps and link up to their internal systems using a combination of RSS and their own bespoke XML warning system.
From this interest has grown to include some of these big names:
- Ordnance Survey
- ESRI
- Leicestershire County Council Emergency Planning
- Dorset Districts
- Purbeck
- East Dorset
- West Dorset
- Quite a few more…
