Mobile Phone Calls On Aeroplanes!

March 28th, 2008. Published under General. 1 Comment.

What is there actually stopping us making phone calls from the air? Is it that our phones might “intefere with the planes navigational systems”? Bollocks! The only real thing is the fact that cell networks don’t point up high enough.

Well someone seems to have pulled their finger out their ass. We (Europeans) will soon be able to make phone calls in-flight. This is once the plane has reached 3000 metres. There will be no difference to using your phone as normal (except maybe a delay). It is said that there will be an antenna onboard that will allow you to use your home network. Although it’s odd that you will be on an international flight. Don’t get me wrong I am definitely not complaining that calls and texts will cost the same as they do on the ground in your home country!

I wonder what will come next? Free WiFi in economy. Before anyone says, I know some airlines do this already. Also Virgin America will be launching free Wi-Fi in-flight soon announced in an interview with TechCrunch.

It’ a shame I just came back from holiday, will be a while before I can test it!

Funnily enough, I tested this once when I was grounded at Cardiff International Airport during a flight to Plymouth. I was scared because I heard the cockpit radio transmissions! No joke, they must’ve been using the same frequency…

But yeah, an onboard antenna should solve that problem. Unless they have to change frequencies. I think I agree with those people who would hate to have to put up with phonecalls though, to the effect of a regular storm of “I’m on the plane!” etc… WiFi would be good though.
